Bajirao Mastani
Bajirao Mastani is a beautiful historic love story between Peshwa Bajirao and Mastani. In the early 18th century, the court of Maratha king Chhatrapati Shahu needed a new Peshwa, the equivalent of a modern-day prime minister. Mastani, the daughter of Hindu Rajput ruler Chhatrasal and his Persian Muslim consort Ruhani Bai, reveals herself. Bajirao, impressed with her abilities as a warrior, lends her his troops and helps her beat the invaders. Chhatrasal is thrilled and insists that Bajirao spend Holi in Bundelkhand with them.
When Mastani and Bajirao fall in love, he presents her his
dagger, unaware that the Bundelkhand Rajputs use it as a symbol of marriage. Mastani arrives in Pune determined to follow her love but is treated cruelly by Bajirao's mother and kept in the palace for courtesans. During a storm, Bajirao reminds her that he is already married and that if she is in a relationship with him, his court will never respect her. Despite his warnings, she agrees, and he declares Mastani his second wife.
Radhabai imprisons Mastani after Bajirao leaves for battle. In his wrath, Bajirao defeats Nasir Jung's army on his own after receiving the news, but he collapses from his injuries.Kashibai writes a letter to Radhabai begging her to release Mastani so that Bajirao can recover, but Nana Saheb burns the letter. Bajirao dies from the trauma of his hallucinations, while Mastani dies in captivity. After death, the ill-fated lovers are shown to be together.
