Straight Up
From: Forever Your Girl (1988)
The first two singles from Forever Your Girl failed to make any
ripples in the charts. But before anyone had a chance to write
her off, Paula Abdul released Straight Up, a mid-tempo dance
number written and produced by Elliott Wolff. The song has a
pop and New Jack Swing beat to it. It has a memorable hook
and sassy singing. She was bold and aggressive in the song and
that was perfect for the subject matter. Also, she took a chance
at rapping in the song which paid off well.
Although it’s been over two decades since Paula Abdul last
released a new album, her hits of the late ’80s and early ’90s
are a reminder of all that was hip, cool, and fresh about the
music from that period. She has sold over 53 million albums
during her career. In addition to her singing, she’s known for
her choreography.
